Notes for IONA I. PIER:

Iona I. Pier was born May 14, 1866, in Blooming Grove, Pennsylvania, the daughter of Silas and Ellen (Sacket) Pier.  Her death certificate is in error, since her parents were not known to have returned to Chautauqua Co., after they moved to Pennsylvania.  She married August Algot Anderson on October 28, 1885, in Harmony, Chautauqua Co., New York.  They had eight children.

Genealogy by Dorothy Bacheller:

"Silas and Ellen apparently had a difficult time providing for their family, because in 1869, when Iona was three, until 1875, she lived with the family of her distant cousin, Emily Lovejoy, daughter of Lucretia (Sackett) Gleason, who was Iona's great-aunt."

In 1870 Iona is not recorded in the household of Silas and Ellen, Emily Gleason or Ambrose Blackmer.  She has not been found in any other household either.

1875 State Census of New York, Chautauqua Co., line 20: 106 Frame 400 107;

John J. Lovejoy   age 40   Chautauqua Co.   farmer

Emily Lovejoy            44   Chautauqua Co.   wife

H. Wilson Lovejoy     18   Chautauqua Co.   farmer

Edwin G. Lovejoy       14   Chautauqua Co.   son

James W. Lovejoy     12   Chautauqua Co.,  son

Levi J. Lovejoy            4   Chautauqua Co.    son

Iona Pier                      9   Chautauqua Co.    boarder

The 1880 Census of Ashville, Chautauqua Co., New York, shows Iona, age 14, born in Pennsylvania, as a boarder, living in the household of Ambrose Blackmer and his wife Martha, where she cared for the widow of Holland Blackmer, who was bedridden for 20 years because of a broken hip.  Also living there was Ambrose;s mother Polly, his sister-in-law Della Berry, and boarder, Utley Wedge, a schoolteacher.  Iona is listed as a boarder attending school.  Also in the household was Clemment Roberts, 14, a grandson, working as a laborer.

In 1885 she married August Anderson, who had immigrated from Sweden in 1882.  On Iona's marriage certificate, the minitster spelled her name as Pryer.  Iona and August lived on the Blackmer farm for several years following their marriage.  They moved to a farm on the outskirts of Panama some time before June 1891.

Five of their children attended institutions of higher education.

In late 1926, Iona suffered a stroke, and was partly paralyzed, and was cared for by her daughter Augusta, who gave up her teaching job.  Iona died in the old farmhouse twelve years later."

Iona was nearly 44 years old when her last child was born.

Iona I. (Pier) Anderson survived her husband by almost 5 years, and lived to be one day short of her 72nd birthday, dying May 13, 1938 in Panama, Chautauqua Co., New York.

Notes for AUGUST ALGOT ANDERSON:

Genealogy by Dorothy (Cartwright) Bacheller: 1999,

"August Alcot Anderson was born March 30, 1863, in Nabben, Natered, Skaraborgs Lan, Sweden, the son of Anders Abrahamsson and Sophia Von der Loft.  He imigrated to America March 17, 1882, landing at Castle Garden in New York.  He joined his brothers in the Jamestown area, working as a hired hand for Ambrose Blackmer, where he met Iona, then a member of the Blackmer household.

He married Iona Pier on October 28, 1885, at the Panama Baptist Church, in the Town of Harmony, Chautauqua Co., New York, Allen A. Jones, Paster, officiated.  On the marriage license, August listed his residence as Ellicott, and Iona, who spelled her name Pyer, listed hers as Harmony.  August was 23, and Iona was 29. They had eight children.

Sometime after the birth of their first child, August and Iona moved to the farm on the Panama-Steadman Road (in the 1905 Census this is called the Open Meadow Road)  on the outskirts of the Village of Panama.

Probably because the original house was too small for the growing family, they moved back to the Blackmer farm in 1893.  They returned to the Anderson farm in 1894, when August built the two story addition to the old part of the house.  In later times the original part contained a parlor, dining room, pantry and kitchen, with a bathroom on the first floor.  In the attic were two bedrooms.  The addition contained a seldom used best parlor and two bedrooms on the first floor, and one very large bedroom on the second floor, where several of the girls slept.

August and Iona planted an orchard on the hillside and engaged in poultry farming.  Most of the fruit trees froze out, but they had cherry and apple trees (that adapted to the weather).  A small dairy herd, consisting of 6 cows, (more than) supplied the family needs for milk and butter.  Their eggs from about 500 chickens were shipped to New York, and the fruit was marketed locally.  They also kept two horses, one was a plow horse, and the other, named Belle, a riding horse belonged to a local teacher.

August was the initiator of a system of electric lights in the locality, and had his own generator.

He was also proud of the fact that he heard Jenny Lind sing during one of her American tours."
